What should you look for in a carrier?
- Sturdy construction with secure latches that cannot pop open.
- Top and front opening. A carrier that opens on top lets you lift a nervous cat out without pulling it through a small door. Two-part carriers that unclip are handy at the vet.
- Right size. Your cat should be able to stand, turn and lie down, but not so big that it slides around.
- Ventilation on several sides.
- Easy cleaning, with a washable pad and a smooth interior.
- Car safety. Make sure the carrier can be secured with a seat belt or sits stable on the floor.
Hard or soft carrier?
Hard-sided carriers are easier to clean and protect better in a crash. Soft carriers are lighter and can fit under seats, but need a firm base and good ventilation. Either works if it is secure and the right size.
How do you make a carrier a safe place?
Leave it out with the door open, add a blanket and treats, and feed near it. Train gradually with rewards, as in our travel guide and clicker guide.
Flying
Airline rules differ, so check the maximum carrier size and any pet fees directly with the airline before buying.
How big should a cat carrier be?
Big enough for your cat to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably, but snug enough to feel secure. Large cats such as Maine Coons often need an extra-large model.
How do you clean a carrier?
Remove the bedding and wash it, wipe the shell with mild unscented soap, rinse and dry well. Avoid strong-smelling disinfectants. A pet-safe enzymatic cleaner helps if there has been an accident.
Can you use a carrier as a bed?
Yes, and it is a good idea. Leaving the carrier out with a soft blanket makes it familiar, so vet trips become less stressful. See traveling with cats.
When should a carrier be replaced?
Replace it when latches, hinges or the handle are cracked or loose, or when the base is damaged. A failed latch can let a frightened cat escape.
