Cat Care

Everyday cat care comes down to a safe home, good food and water, a clean litter box, grooming, play and regular vet visits. Use these guides to build a routine that suits your cat's age and lifestyle.

What does a good daily routine include?

Fresh water and measured meals, a scooped litter box, some play and affection, and a quick look at how your cat is behaving. Weekly: brush, check nails and teeth, and wash bedding. Yearly: vet check and vaccines as advised.

What does your cat need at home?

The AAFP/ISFM guidelines say cats need a safe place, several separate resources (food, water, litter, scratching, rest), play and respect for their sense of smell. In practice that means more than one bed, such as in our cat bed guide, a sturdy scratcher, and vertical space.

Where do I start?

New to cats? Begin with the litter box and kitten guides. Caring for an older cat? Read the senior guide and the health hub.

What supplies does a new cat owner need?

A carrier, litter box and litter, food and water bowls, a scratching post, a bed, toys, a brush and nail clippers, and an ID tag, with a microchip arranged through your vet. See our kitten care guide and product guides.

How much does cat care cost?

Costs vary a lot by country and by cat. Plan for food, litter, vet visits and vaccines, parasite prevention, and an emergency fund or pet insurance if available where you live.

How can I keep my cat healthy long term?

Combine regular vet visits, a measured diet, daily play, a clean litter box and a calm home. Learn the warning signs in our health hub.
