Cat Health
Good cat health comes from regular vet checks, a healthy weight, dental care, parasite prevention and a stress-free home. Because cats hide illness, learn the early warning signs and know what counts as an emergency.
How often should my cat see a vet?
At least once a year for adult cats, and about every six months for seniors, so problems can be caught early. Kittens need a series of visits for vaccines, parasite control and neutering or spaying. Take a short list of any changes you have noticed.
What should I check at home?
Do a quick weekly check: eating and drinking, litter box habits, weight and coat, eyes and nose, teeth and gums, and how easily your cat moves. Our guide to common cat health problems lists the signs to watch for.
What preventive care matters most?
- Vaccination and parasite control based on your vet's advice for your cat's age and lifestyle
- Dental care, including brushing and regular checks
- Healthy weight through measured meals and play
- A good home environment, since stress can affect health, including the urinary tract
- Spay or neuter and microchip
When is it an emergency?
Straining to urinate, open-mouth breathing, collapse, seizures, suspected poisoning and serious injury need immediate veterinary care. Do not wait to see whether it improves. Read the emergency care guide.
How do I choose a vet?
Look for a practice close to home with clear emergency arrangements, calm handling, and staff who explain options. Many clinics have cat-only appointment times or quiet waiting areas, and some hold cat-friendly accreditation. Ask about out-of-hours care before you need it.
How do I get my cat to the vet with less stress?
Leave the carrier out at home, practice short car trips and use treats. See traveling with cats and our carrier guide.
What should I bring to a vet visit?
Notes on appetite, drinking, litter box use and any changes, a list of foods and medications, previous records, and a stool or urine sample if the vet asked for one. Photos or short videos of symptoms can help.
